The contender MS a.ka Microsoft

MS the desktop king unable to acquire Yhoo… and with a history of a lousy live.com, did not gave up easily on the search engine arena, received lot punches from consumers lately (vista related), round by round (web, phones, maps, search, UI, mp3 player) they have been the underdog. But it seems that MS is picking up the pace once more with BING.

The champion G a.ka Google

G The reigning pound for pound web and search champion of the world, GOOGLE billions pages indexed, hundreds of thousands of search results for the keywords “beyonce single ladies”, the reigning WBC (Web Based Company ) heavy wieght champion, Praised by many for not being evil, their android ultimately sucks, google maps, mail, and youtube is the best in my opinion.

Ladies and gentlemen let’s get ready too rumbleeeeerrrrrerrrererererer.

Round 1: Search home page

plain and simple                                                 nice graphics what is it for?

Round 2: Search landing page

In my example I used the keyword dwight howard, you will notice the result difference right away D-howard is a b-ball player,

In google the first result is latest new bout D-howard with how many mins the article was posted then nba.com,the wikipedia, there is a search option it will show up a left pane for search filters lets say u want to see d-howard topis on forums, or latest new bout d-howard in the last 24 hours.

In bing the players stats of like his last 3 games, then news, then wikipedia, on the left side we also have the smart filter, d-howard is good on dunks so they also group some search result on d-howards dunks good thing, and there also related searches of similar b-ball superstars like dwyane wade.

Round 2: Auto Suggest

Google – check – results is what you have expected auto suggest kinda lag (ajax thingy)
Bing     – check – same with google results is what you have expected but it’s much faster

BTW for my readers who do not know yet I’m from cebu “bisdak kaayo ko”, So now I tried the keyword “PC express” hoping it would auto suggest

Google – The next word to appear is cebu looks like this “PC express cebu”
Bing     – The next word to appear is manila and will look like this “PC express manila”

I’m not going to comment yet on this if google is more good in local features

Round 3: Did you mean?/Were you looking for?

Google – check – corrects wrong spellings, suggests correct much sound keyword
Bing     – check – same with google, corrects wrong spellings, corrects your keywords and etc.

Round 4: Quick Info

Ahh what’s again the number for HSBC credit card toll free
So I type it in both google and bing “HSBC Phlippines toll free “ then hit space bar hoping it would suggest another word like “number” or “hotline” google suggested number, bing did not append another word. Both of them did not gave me the correct number right away I need to digg down at the 3rd result for bing and 4th for google. Well at least I don’t have go click another page, the complete number is found at the result.

My first example is too local, well that’s the future local information at your fingertips never mind, let just try this one out “NBA finals” current events and a popular search,  I just want a quick info score maybe, schedule, who won in the last game?.

Google’s top result NBA.com:FINALS 2009 they want me to go to nba.com, hoping i might get my quick info on the next click,

Bing on the otherhand is quick enough to hand me an info though, “great left hook” as of this writing the finals has not yet started it somehow showed on top result the final score of the last game that was CLE vs ORL for east finals orl won w/c earned them the right to face LAL for finals (congrats d-howard) and the sched for the next game LAL vs ORL for nba championship game1, that’s quick, and only means that glancing is faster than a click.

Going back to round 2 I typed in pc express google gave me cebu, and google also gave me a map right on top of my result where pc express cebu is located, that’s quick info also so I know where’s the store at is located, “another killer jab” for google’s local feature.

Round 5: Relevance

On search engines relevance is putting the most relevant content on top of your results, For me relevance depends on what you “REALLY WANT TO” achieve in your search, let say “cebu hotels” results should be hotels in cebu, it would be nicer if hotel info such as contact num, accommodations, and prices are present within the results. both G and B did a good job on relevance, both toped Cebu marriot hotel in their results followed by shang and waterfornt, G showed again its power punching local feature, this time showing the cebu hotels in maps i think about 10 of them.

Round 6: Speed, Agility, Brain, and Belly
G – Is quick even with a big stomach – I tried “enterprisedb” Its not referring to database used in the enterprise it’s the commercial version of postgre database,  Results 110 of about 277,000 for enterprisedb with Safesearch on. (0.05 seconds) , G gave out 277,000 natural for 5 years or so.

B – Is quick also, stomach is not that full maybe bcoz of relevance and not all pages are indexed yet, 1-10 of 59,000,000 results, B gcve out 59,000,000 results in 0.05 seconds.

Round 7: Over all scorecard

G – Is still my preference more indexed pages, hard to find keywords, mature, and local feature, in the future more local restos or events will be searched on the net, I remember someone saying that with internet on the mobile more search will be focused on local. and I like clean boring plain white.

B – If you live in US I think B is a winner, it has indexed lots of US sites already so you get more relevant results for travel, local places, events and business, B focuses on decisions it gives you results you can compare. I still don’t like yet as of now the graphics on the home page it lags when being loaded or I think its the javascripts.
